St Paul's Church and A Famosa

St. Pauls Church

Now let me have a short introduction about the St.Paul's Church

How do you get there?
From Dutch Square, walk along Jalan Kota as it makes a circle around St Paul's Hill. When you reach Porta de Santiago, you will find the flight to steps going up St Paul's hill behind it. The steps leads to the ruins of St Paul's Church. You can see various museum along the way to reach the St.Paul's Church. We proceeded all the way from St. Paul's Hills to reach the St.Paul's Church.. Upon reaching the top of the St Paul's Hill, you will be attracted by the breath-taking view of the city of Malacca and its coastline.

St. Paul's Church is a historic church building in Malacca that was originally built in 1521. It is located at the summit of St. Paul's Hill. When the Dutch wrestled Malacca from the Portuguese in 1641, they destroyed all the Portuguese buildings except for the fortress, on which they placed the Dutch emblem. This can be seen today on the remaining gate of the fortress, the Porta de Santiago. Providing you some information about the history of the St.Paul's Church- The St Paul's Church was built by Duarte Coelho, a Portuguese Captain in 1521 AD. The church was formerly a chapel for the Portuguese and was named as 'Nosa Senhora' which means Our Lady of the Hill. Although what remains of the church are now only ruins, the strong and thick bricks are a reminder that this chapel used to be a magnificent piece of architecture at that time. However when the Dutch colonized Malacca, the church's fate changed. It was no longer used as a place of worship. After the Dutch's Christ Church was completed, the St Paul's Church was turned into a burial ground. It is really saddening though.

Some information about A FAMOSA from me to you! :
The Porte De Santiago (A Famosa) is one of the most popular sites that you can find when visiting Malacca. It is located just next to the Stadthuys. You just need to take the stair case which is just about 5-10 minutes of walking distance from the St.Paul's Church. It is a major historical landmark and is probably the most photographed structure in Malacca. The fort of Porte De Santiago (A Famosa) is one of the oldest surviving European architectural remains in the whole of Asia.

A FAMOSA!  Its really embarrassing that I just knew this is how A Famosa looks like!
These are the histories that I've found about the A FAMOSA,it is really useful and informative!
The Portuguese in their quest for finding a trading route to India, established outposts like Macau and Goa. Then the Portuguese fleet commanded by Alfonso de Albuquerque set foot on Melaka Malaysia. The Portuguese attacked and defeated the armies of the Melaka Sultanate. The Sultanate didn’t give up easily and he kept  trying to kick the Portuguese out again, so Alfonso de Albuquerque ordered to built the A Famosa fortress. It was built around a natural hill near the sea and managed to fend of attacks by the armies of Sultan of Malacca for over a century.Unfortunately for the Portuguese, the Dutch East Indian Company (abbreviated in Dutch to VOC) took over the trading routes and drove the Portuguese out of Malacca in 1641.What happens next?

The Dutch of course fortified the fortress and added the date ‘ANNO 1670′ on the gate of a Famos! .The A Famosa fortress changed hands again in the early 19th century when the Dutch handed it over to the British to keep it out of the hands of French colonizer Napoleon.Unfortunately for A Famosa: the British were wary of maintaining the fortification and ordered its destruction. When S Famosa was almost demolished, Sir Stamford Raffles(founder of Singapore), happened to visit Malacca. This gate called Porta de Santiago was spared from destruction. Bet you will feel really familiar with this part of the history as this was what I've learnt from my History Subject in high school!

Until today, It is still standing!

A picture with the classmate, Claudia the Portuguese!

There aren't really many choices of public transport in Malacca. The easiest way to get to Porte De Santiago (A Famosa) is by driving there or get on a taxi. Locals would be able to lead you there as it is a famous landmark in Malacca.

It was such a tiring day after visiting so many places.I did gain a lot of knowledge about Malacca throughout this trip! Malacca is really beautiful despite the hot weather here!
